The place that kicked off this venture, and inspired the idea in the first place was at the Afghan Kitchen in Angel. This is more of a cafe than a restaurant, supposedly on two floors but we only saw the downstairs, and seemed very popular when we arrived - it was pretty busy both for sit down meals and people popping in to collect take-aways.
I'd found the place by searching on the internet for somewhere different to eat after a drink in Angel. It had very good reviews (I notice that more recent ones are less good, criticising especially the service). We didn't book a table, and had only an address to go on, so wandered the high street until we found it - quite an unassuming place.
Luckily, despite not booking they managed to find us a table in the window. And I mean literally in the window - not by the window! We sat on the window ledge and were a little cramped next to another group, but it was fine.
They serve a choice of just a few dishes, primarily stews, and prices, if I remember correctly, were very reasonable. They had a choice of veggie dishes too. I can't remember what we all ordered, but Joanne and Andrew had a meat stew that was apparently very nice, and I'm guessing Emma and I had some sort of veggie stew which was also good. We didn't stay for dessert (I think they just had baclava) as they had people queuing (a bit) to get in. Service was fine, if functional rather than pleasant.
All in all a good experience, with the nice food making up for the cramped conditions, though it is nice being in a busy, 'working' place. Not somewhere I'd make a special effort to go back to, but definitely somewhere I'd pop in again if I was passing.
